Fiji Deploys Liaison Officers to Safeguard Seasonal Workers Across Australia and New Zealand

The Fijian government is steadfast in its decision to appoint country liaison officers focused on overseeing Fijian seasonal workers in Australia and New Zealand, addressing growing concerns about worker exploitation and modern-day slavery. This decision has sparked a debate, particularly from Opposition MPs like Faiyaz Koya, who questioned the need for these officers when Fijian missions are already tasked with worker welfare. Koya further inquired if the liaison officers would collaborate with unions representing Fijian workers.

Employment Minister Agni Deo Singh responded by highlighting that the current missions lack the necessary manpower to effectively monitor the 496 worker sites throughout Australia and New Zealand. The new liaison officers will work directly with unions, including the Australian Council of Trade Unions, to ensure compliance with labor standards. Singh emphasized that their role is crucial for protecting the rights and welfare of Fijian workers abroad and praised the contributions made by the three liaison officers under the Pacific Australia Labor Mobility Scheme.

Concerns were also raised by Opposition MP Premilla Kumar about the potential for these liaison officers to replace existing staff at missions. However, Singh clarified that the officers are intended to complement the staff’s efforts and will provide monthly reports to the Fijian government detailing their activities. The recent inquiry in New South Wales into modern-day slavery involving Fijian workers was a key consideration for the appointments, and Singh indicated he plans to meet with his Australian counterpart in Canberra to strengthen oversight on this matter.

While acknowledging that many employers offer positive experiences for workers, Singh pointed out that some have created intolerable conditions, underscoring the necessity of liaison officers. The Fijian government’s actions reflect a commitment to safeguarding fair treatment for all workers, enhancing monitoring procedures, and tackling serious issues that affect Fijian laborers abroad.

The collaborative efforts between Fijian authorities and Australian trade unions represent a proactive stance aimed at upholding worker rights and fostering equitable working conditions. With these measures in place, there is a hopeful trajectory towards improved labor standards, ensuring that all Fijian workers feel secure and supported in their employment.
