The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has announced that a significant portion of participants in a recent public consultation regarding electricity tariff adjustments expressed their support for the proposed changes. Out of 975 submissions received, 51 percent acknowledged the need for these adjustments, highlighting the importance of improving Fiji’s electricity infrastructure and encouraging a shift toward renewable energy sources.

Feedback from the consultation underscored that many proponents of the tariff changes preferred a phased implementation approach to lessen the potential financial burden on consumers. Nevertheless, concerns persist among the public about the escalating cost of living, with around 37 percent of participants opposing any increase in electricity tariffs due to the financial strains currently faced by households and the rising costs of non-regulated goods and services.

In light of these diverse opinions, the FCCC has decided to postpone its final decision on the electricity tariffs until April 30, 2026. This extension will provide more time for discussions with Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) and the government to investigate potential support measures and financing solutions.

The FCCC remains committed to striking a balance between the essential investments needed for infrastructure development and the protection of consumers. This commitment fosters a positive outlook for the sustainable energy future of Fiji while addressing the public’s concerns about affordability and financial stability. The ongoing dialogues promise a collaborative approach to achieving sustainable energy goals that align with consumer needs.
