The Ministry of Education has decided to postpone the distribution of back-to-school assistance to parents in a bid to prevent misuse of funds during the festive season. Education Minister Aseri Radrodro highlighted that this adjustment was prompted by consistent reports of parents spending the financial assistance on non-educational items before the start of the academic year.
Minister Radrodro explained, “This change is necessary to ensure that the financial assistance serves its intended purpose.” He indicated that the funds would be disbursed closer to the commencement of the school year, enabling parents to focus on purchasing essential educational supplies.
Previous patterns showed that many parents misappropriated the funds, often diverting them toward personal expenses, especially when their children were living with relatives. Radrodro emphasized the importance of responsible spending and reminded families to use the back-to-school allowance solely for school-related needs.
Furthermore, he expressed concerns about potential price hikes on school supplies as the term approaches, stating that the Fiji Competition and Consumer Commission would oversee retailers to ensure fair pricing practices.
