Fiji’s 55th Independence Anniversary was marked by vibrant celebrations and a strong sense of community as six Cabinet ministers engaged with Fijian populations around the globe to commemorate Fiji Day. The events underscored the significance of leadership and innovation, particularly among the nation’s youth. Minister for Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations, Agni Deo Singh, who attended celebrations in Geelong, Melbourne, urged young Fijians to embrace their cultural heritage and to work towards a promising future. He stated, “To our young people, this is your moment… Dream big, serve faithfully, and let your generation be the bridge that connects Fiji’s past to its future.”
In South Australia’s Limestone Coast, Minister for Information Lynda Tabuya acknowledged the invaluable contributions of Fijian and Pacific workers involved in the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) Scheme. She expressed that these individuals serve as “ambassadors of Fiji,” emphasizing that their dedication fosters pride in the Fijian identity through the values of respect, humility, and service.
The celebrations also reached Auckland, New Zealand, where Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection Sashi Kiran lauded the Fijian diaspora for retaining their connections to their homeland. She referred to the gathering as an “Emerald Jubilee,” reflecting themes of unity, resilience, and shared progress. Kiran pointed out the government’s commitment to rebuilding essential infrastructure as part of the new National Development Plan, which aims to ensure inclusivity for all citizens.
Minister for Justice and Acting Attorney-General Siromi Turaga participated in the events in Wellington, conveying greetings from Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. He highlighted the pride and blessings inherent in Fijian identity, stating, “The saying ‘You can take a Fijian out of Fiji, but not Fiji out of a Fijian’ truly captures the pride and belonging reflected here today.”
In another demonstration of community spirit, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation Viliame Gavoka celebrated Fiji Day at the Fiji Embassy in Jerusalem while also participating in the Feast of Tabernacle. Prime Minister Rabuka joined the Fiji Day festivities in Liverpool, Australia, together with Minister for iTaukei Affairs Ifireimi Vasu and Assistant Minister for Health Penioni Ravunawa, reinforcing the sense of unity and engagement among Fijians living abroad.
This year’s Independence Day not only provided an opportunity for Fijians around the world to reconnect with their roots but also instilled a feeling of hope and direction for the future.
