Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka recently confirmed that six Cabinet ministers and one assistant minister were abroad during the Fiji Day celebrations, representing the Government at events for Fijian communities across different countries. This decision, which was made after requests from the ministers, symbolizes the Government’s acknowledgment of the contributions made by Fijians living overseas.
In a statement addressing their absence, Mr. Rabuka emphasized that their participation in international celebrations illustrates the support for the Fijian diaspora and the value they bring to Fiji’s economy and social fabric. The Prime Minister noted that their travel and related expenses were covered by their respective ministries.
He highlighted that invitations from Fijian communities abroad are evaluated individually, ensuring that each visit aligns with official duties. Rabuka pointed out the importance of these visits, which partly aim to deliver essential government services to expatriates. For instance, many Fijians in cities like Sydney received assistance through government ‘Road Show’ tours, which addressed various issues, such as immigration matters and electoral inquiries.
The Fiji Day celebrations were marked by notable speeches from ministers abroad. In Melbourne, Minister for Employment Agni Deo Singh encouraged young Fijians to adopt leadership roles and innovate. Meanwhile, in New Zealand, Minister for Women Sashi Kiran praised the diaspora for maintaining strong ties with their homeland, and Minister for Justice Siromi Turaga conveyed greetings from Prime Minister Rabuka in Wellington.
In Jerusalem, Deputy Prime Minister Viliame Gavoka commemorated Fiji Day at the Fiji Embassy during his participation in the Feast of Tabernacles, while Prime Minister Rabuka officiated in Liverpool, Australia, alongside Minister for iTaukei Affairs Ifereimi Vasu. Additionally, Assistant Minister for Health Penioni Ravunawa celebrated with Fijians in Australia.
These events illustrate the Government’s focus on recognizing and connecting with the Fijian diaspora, reinforcing a sense of unity and support for the nation’s overseas citizens.
