Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced that six Cabinet ministers and one assistant minister represented the Fijian Government during Fiji Day celebrations abroad, highlighting the contributions of Fijians living overseas. This decision, made following requests from the ministers themselves, underscores the Government’s commitment to engaging with the Fijian diaspora.
In his statement regarding their absence from domestic celebrations, Mr. Rabuka emphasized that their presence at international events is a testament to the significant role expatriates play in both the economy and the social landscape of Fiji. He noted that the travel expenses for these representatives were covered by their respective ministries.
The Prime Minister pointed out that invitations from Fijian communities abroad are assessed on a case-by-case basis to ensure they align with the ministers’ official duties. Such visits are not just ceremonial; they aim to provide critical government services to Fijians living abroad. For example, expatriates in cities like Sydney benefited from government ‘Road Show’ tours that addressed important issues, including immigration and electoral procedures.
During the celebrations, various ministers delivered impactful speeches. In Melbourne, Employment Minister Agni Deo Singh encouraged young Fijians to embrace leadership and innovation. In New Zealand, Women’s Minister Sashi Kiran commended the diaspora for their ongoing connection to Fiji, while Justice Minister Siromi Turaga conveyed greetings from Prime Minister Rabuka in Wellington. Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Viliame Gavoka commemorated Fiji Day at the Fiji Embassy in Jerusalem during the Feast of Tabernacles, and Prime Minister Rabuka officiated events in Liverpool, Australia, alongside Minister for iTaukei Affairs Ifereimi Vasu. Additionally, Assistant Minister for Health Penioni Ravunawa celebrated with Fijians in Australia.
