The Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS) has successfully thwarted a significant smuggling attempt involving 57,740 undeclared cigarette sticks over the last financial year. This seizure underscores the agency’s ongoing efforts to protect government revenue and maintain fair trade practices.
Cigarettes, categorized as highly dutiable goods, are often smuggled into the country by seafarers, leading to illegal evasion of import duties and revenue losses. Udit Singh, the CEO of FRCS, emphasized the crucial role customs officers play in border protection and ensuring fairness for compliant businesses and taxpayers. “Smuggling not only robs the nation of much-needed development funds but also undermines fairness for compliant taxpayers and businesses,” Singh stated.
The FRCS is dedicated to stringent law enforcement and has pledged to implement stronger border control measures to secure government revenue critical to national development. The agency has reiterated its call for travelers, seafarers, and shipping agents to make truthful and accurate declarations upon entering Fiji, warning that failure to do so will result in penalties and legal action.
This successful interception comes amidst a wider effort by Fiji’s customs authorities to clamp down on illegal activities. Previous operations, in collaboration with the Fiji Police Force and the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF), have unveiled sophisticated smuggling tactics, including the concealment of illicit goods in everyday items like used water bottles.
