Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has delivered uplifting news regarding crime trends in Fiji, announcing an impressive 18 percent decline in overall crime rates during the first quarter of the year, from August to October. At a recent press conference, Tudravu highlighted that reported cases plummeted from 4,960 in the previous year to 4,049 this year.
This positive shift in crime statistics is apparent across various divisions in Fiji, including the Southern, Western, Eastern, and Central regions. However, the Northern Division saw a slight uptick in crime, with a 3 percent increase. Notably, serious crimes witnessed a significant reduction, dropping by 35 percent across all divisions.
Particularly encouraging is the decrease in offenses against vulnerable populations. Crimes against women fell by 10 percent, while those directed at children saw a remarkable 34 percent drop, reflecting the efficacy of ongoing initiatives designed to safeguard these groups. Nonetheless, Tudravu pointed out that domestic-related crimes, such as assaults and sexual offenses, continue to be areas of concern that require attention.
In a commendable development, cases involving illicit drugs experienced an impressive 30 percent reduction. Following the launch of Operation Sasamaki, police documented 334 drug-related offenses, primarily linked to unlawful possession.
