Overall crime rates in Fiji have seen a significant decline of 18 percent during the first quarter of the year, with all five policing divisions reporting reductions between August and October. Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu shared these encouraging statistics, noting that 4,049 criminal cases were recorded in this period, compared to 4,960 in the same timeframe last year. This positive trend is accompanied by a remarkable 35 percent decrease in serious crimes.
According to Commissioner Tudravu, this improvement stems from targeted operations and rigorous monitoring efforts by divisional teams. The number of drug-related offenses also dropped by 30 percent, amounting to 334 cases, primarily involving unlawful possession, cultivation, and importation of drugs.
The success of these initiatives is largely attributed to Operation Sasamaki, launched in March, which has focused efforts on dismantling drug networks and enhancing community engagement. While these numbers reflect a hopeful direction for public safety in Fiji, the ongoing challenges highlighted in previous reports suggest that continued vigilance is necessary, especially concerning domestic-related offenses and road safety.
Furthermore, the Commissioner intends to provide a detailed breakdown of the statistics to enhance transparency and further encourage community involvement in crime prevention.
