The Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS) is intensifying its enforcement operations to combat the improper use of customs concessions designed for visiting yachts, as stipulated under Code 228, Schedule 2 of the Customs Tariff Act 1986. Recently, charges were brought against the owners of three foreign-registered yachts after authorities found they were offering paid charter and cruising services in Fiji’s waters, which violates regulations that solely permit personal use under temporary importation conditions.
Fiji’s customs laws impose severe penalties on those who conduct business with a yacht without the necessary approvals. Offenders may be subjected to full import duty alongside fines of up to $25,000 or face up to 10 years in prison. Udit Singh, Chief Executive Officer of FRCS, reiterated the agency’s dedication to preserving border integrity and ensuring a level playing field for legitimate marine tourism operators. He warned that any misuse of the concession system not only undermines its intended purpose but also robs the nation of essential revenue.
To address these infractions, Singh announced heightened surveillance efforts and strict enforcement against those who violate the regulations. He urged yacht owners to comply with all rules and secure required approvals before engaging in commercial operations in Fiji.
This enforcement push aligns with FRCS’s broader strategy to effectively manage maritime activities and support the national economy.
