Drug dealers have received a strong warning from the courts regarding their activities, particularly in relation to supplying drugs to minors and using illicit gains to support alcohol purchases. Magistrate Yogesh Prasad issued a firm message while sentencing Marika Magita, a municipal council employee, to one year in prison for possessing marijuana along with $186, which was identified as the proceeds of crime.
On October 3, during a police patrol, officers noticed Magita and several youths behaving suspiciously at Tikaram Park in Lami. Upon investigation, they found nine sachets of marijuana and cash in her possession. The court deemed her a drug dealer, with Magistrate Prasad commenting, “Selling drugs to youths for beer is an abhorrent act that warrants an immediate custodial sentence.” In addition to the one-year prison term, Magita received a concurrent three-month sentence for a second offense.
This ruling is part of a broader initiative addressing drug-related crimes in Fiji and reflects an increasing judicial commitment to accountability.
