The Judiciary of Fiji has announced a landmark decision: the Fiji Court of Appeal will convene its November 2025 session in Ba, making it the first time the court operates outside of the capital, Suva. This session is scheduled to run from November 3 to 14 and is being hailed as a key initiative to enhance access to justice for all Fijians.
Chief Registrar Tomasi Bainivalu highlighted that this move is part of a broader effort to improve accessibility to judicial services across the nation. “We aim to increase access to justice and to convey the message that the courts of Fiji are for all citizens, not just those residing in Suva,” he stated.
Leading the upcoming session will be President Isikeli Mataitoga, along with a distinguished panel including senior Justices of Appeal from Fiji and three representatives from Australia and New Zealand. This impressive lineup reflects a strong commitment to maintaining high standards of judicial integrity and efficiency.
Chief Justice Hon. Mr. Justice Salesi Temo praised the decision to hold the session in Ba, describing it as a significant and inclusive measure that underscores the judiciary’s dedication to reaching citizens in their local communities. “Bringing the Court of Appeal to Ba is a step forward in making the judiciary more accessible and inclusive,” he noted, emphasizing the importance of serving the public at their location.
This initiative aligns well with the recent opening of the $29 million Ba Court complex, which is expected to greatly improve access to justice for residents in Ba and nearby areas, including Ra, Tavua, and Rakiraki. Notably, the complex will house a High Court, allowing local litigants to manage their High Court matters without needing to travel to Lautoka.
The Fijian government’s commitment to justice was also echoed by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka during the inauguration of the new court, where he stressed the importance of every citizen’s right to seek justice, further bolstered by the modern facilities of the new court.
The public will be encouraged to observe court proceedings, with protocols and security measures in place. This initiative, along with the advanced capabilities of the new court, promises to foster a more equitable legal environment, ensuring that all Fijians can access the justice they deserve.
This transformative step represents a hopeful outlook for Fiji’s judicial system, signaling progress toward comprehensive and accessible legal resources nationwide, ultimately contributing to a more just and equitable society.
