The Command Group of the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS), under the leadership of Acting Commissioner Sevuloni Naucukidi, has initiated discussions with the Ministry of Sugar, represented by Director Praneel Naidu. The objective of these discussions is to explore new opportunities for inmate participation in cane-cutting operations to alleviate labor shortages currently faced by sugar farmers. This collaboration is not only aimed at boosting agricultural productivity but also at providing inmates with a chance to positively contribute to their communities.
During the meeting, several key issues were addressed, including the enhancement of existing operations, the fair selection of farms for inmate engagement, and expanding inmate participation throughout the entire farming cycle. Naucukidi expressed his appreciation to the Ministry for its continued partnership and indicated the FCS’s willingness to modify its operational framework to encourage more inmate participation in the Musu Dovu cane-cutting initiative.
Naidu supported the integration of inmates into the workforce, citing their track record of reliability and the absence of complaints from farmers regarding their work. He pointed out that the demand for inmate labor has been on the rise, underscoring their significant role within the agricultural sector.
Naucukidi highlighted the dual benefits of this initiative, noting that it not only supports the sugar industry but also aids in the rehabilitation of inmates. Engaging in meaningful work fosters behavioral improvement and serves as motivation for inmates to maintain compliance during their incarceration. He also stressed the importance of instilling valuable life skills such as hard work, discipline, and teamwork, which are crucial for their successful reintegration into society upon release.
As part of their commitment to rehabilitation and community engagement, the FCS leadership completed their visit to the Western Division by interacting with inmates and personnel in Ba, Tavua, and Rakiraki. This initiative exemplifies a proactive approach within correctional services to meet societal needs while enhancing personal development opportunities for inmates, reflecting a positive and hopeful outlook for the future.
