Schools are being encouraged to allow students who are dissatisfied with their examination results to repeat their current grade, providing them an opportunity to improve their academic performance. Education Minister Aseri Radrodro has raised this issue following reports of certain educational institutions that have either turned down such requests or have policies in place that make it difficult for students to repeat a grade.
With concerns about declining examination results at particular levels last year, the Minister believes this initiative will offer essential support to students and lead to better academic outcomes. “I am urging schools not to turn away students who wish to repeat, as some may be slower academically,” Radrodro emphasized. He pointed out that this new policy aims to ensure students develop a strong academic foundation before progressing to the next grade level.
Moreover, the Minister highlighted that this approach would empower teachers by allowing them to provide more individualized support and communicate effectively with students who may be struggling academically. Muniappa Goundar, General Secretary of the Fiji Teachers Union, expressed his support for the initiative, referencing past experiences where students have shown improved results after being given the opportunity to re-sit their courses.
