Minister for Environment and Climate Change, Mosese Bulitavu, criticized the irresponsible disposal of waste and underscored the potential dangers posed to community health and the fragile marine ecosystem. On November 13, 2025, the Ministry was alerted to this environmental issue and has since partnered with local authorities and hotels in Taveuni and Qamea to investigate the origin of the waste. Although the source remains unidentified, officials are treating the situation with the highest priority. A joint inspection involving representatives from the Ministry and other stakeholders is scheduled for this weekend and early next week.
Minister Bulitavu reiterated the crucial need for adherence to environmental guidelines as outlined in the Environment Management Act of 2005, which mandates a structured waste management and permitting system for all facilities.
