Fiji and the Cook Islands faced off in a closely contested bronze medal match at the OFC Under-19 Women’s Championship 2025, held in Tahiti. The match ended in a tense goalless draw, but Fiji emerged victorious in the penalty shootout, clinching third place with a score of 3-2.

Fiji’s Young Kula team came out strong, demonstrating their determination through early offensive moves led by Caroline Qalivere and Elesi Tabunase. The duo created several scoring opportunities, with Qalivere coming exceptionally close to finding the net as her shot hit the near post.

The first half saw Fiji relentlessly press the Cook Islands, but their efforts were thwarted by an impressive performance from goalkeeper Kimberly Uini, who made several critical saves. As the match progressed, the Cook Islands found their footing, with notable contributions from Metuamaru Areree and Te Upoko Tuariki, who tested Fiji’s defense with their speed and tactical play.

Captain Jan Taia played a pivotal role in organizing the Cook Islands’ defensive line, effectively countering Fiji’s counterattacks through timely interceptions. The second half saw Fiji ramp up their efforts again, with Tabunase and Vunivalu working well together, but they continued to struggle in converting opportunities into goals, as Uini remained steadfast.

Substitute Pekarau Mataio injected fresh energy into the Cook Islands’ attack, while Areree’s pace kept creating breaks. Despite their efforts, the match remained scoreless after ninety minutes and was ultimately decided by penalties.

Both teams can take pride in their performance, showcasing young talent and determination. Fiji’s victory through penalties highlights their resilience and will to succeed, marking a significant achievement in their ongoing development in women’s football.
