The residents of Macuata-i-wai in Vanua Levu experienced a significant uplift during the festive season with the arrival of a new engine boat, funded by Fiji’s Ministry of Environment and Climate Change. This initiative, part of the Communities Climate Adaptation Facility (C-CAF) program, is managed by the Global Centre for Climate Mobility (GCCM).

A total of $US100,000 (approximately $F227,143) in grants has been allocated directly to the community under this program. Minister for Environment Mosese Bulitavu emphasized that this endeavor exemplifies how climate finance can yield practical benefits at a local community level. He stated, “This is how climate finance should work — reaching communities directly and supporting those already facing the impacts of climate change.”

Former president of Fiji and Tui Macuata Ratu Wiliame Katonivere expressed gratitude for the support, highlighting that it offers renewed hope to the residents. He noted that enhanced access could motivate young people to return to their roots, fostering a deeper connection with their village and cultural heritage.

Historically, Macuata-i-wai boasted a vibrant community of 20 households. However, due to the adverse effects of coastal erosion and saltwater intrusion, only two households now remain.

In addition to Macuata-i-wai, two other communities—Narata Village in Nadroga and Vuniudrovu Village in Naitasiri—are set to benefit from similar grants. The C-CAF funding will aid in the restoration of freshwater systems, the construction of climate-resilient housing, and the enhancement of livelihoods, thereby enabling these communities to rebuild and effectively adapt to their changing environment.

This initiative highlights the positive impact of climate finance at a grassroots level, illustrating the way such support can empower communities facing environmental challenges.
