Argentina’s head coach Felipe Contepomi has identified Fiji as a compelling challenge in the Pumas’ upcoming pool for the Rugby World Cup 2027. He emphasized that the focus should be on preparation and performance, rather than worrying about knockout scenarios.
The Pumas and Fiji will compete in the same pool during the expanded 24-team tournament, which will take place in Australia. They will also face Spain and Canada, setting the stage for an exciting encounter between two teams known for their physicality and dynamic playing styles.
Contepomi acknowledged the discussions surrounding possible knockout pathways that arise from the new round-of-16 format but downplayed their significance. “Logic often doesn’t prevail in World Cups, so that doesn’t worry me too much,” said Contepomi when asked about the potential advantages of certain draws. He noted that teams must accept their position in the group and focus on controlling what they can.
He highlighted Fiji as a formidable opponent regardless of the draw’s outcomes and dispelled any notions that Argentina would attempt to manipulate their group position to avoid stronger matchups later in the tournament. Contepomi stated, “If you want to go far, you have to beat whoever is in front of you,” reiterating the importance of facing every challenge head-on.
Moreover, Contepomi firmly rejected any idea that Argentina would ease off against Fiji to influence their path in the knockout stages, asserting, “If we want to go somewhere else in the draw, what, finish second and lose against Fiji? I don’t think so.”
With nearly two years to go before the tournament kicks off, both Argentina and Fiji are expected to utilize the upcoming international windows to strengthen their squads and enhance teamwork. Their clash in the pool could lead to significant consequences, contributing to what many anticipate will be one of the most unpredictable World Cups in history.
