Fiji-China Ties Deepen as 170-Year Chinese Presence Celebrated

The Chinese community in Fiji has proudly marked 170 years since the arrival of its first settlers, reaffirming its dedication to building a stronger, more prosperous nation. This historic occasion was celebrated at a recent event attended by notable figures, including Wang Yuan, Charge d’Affaires of the Chinese Embassy. Yuan highlighted the significant contributions of the Chinese community to Fiji’s development over the past century and a half.

During his address, Yuan expressed the importance of the ongoing relationship between Fiji and China, encouraging efforts to further strengthen bilateral ties for the benefit of both nations. He emphasized cooperation in various areas including development, culture, and economic growth as critical to mutual success.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka echoed these sentiments, stressing the historical partnership with the People’s Republic of China. He noted that Fiji was the first country in the Pacific to establish diplomatic relations with China, a foundation that has fostered fruitful collaborations across multiple sectors including agriculture, fisheries, infrastructure, and health. The ongoing initiatives, particularly under the Belt and Road Initiative, have facilitated significant developmental benefits for Fiji.
