The Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) is calling for enhanced leadership within families and communities to address rising social issues in Fiji, particularly concerning sexual offences, teenage pregnancies, and drug abuse. GCC Chair Ratu Viliame Seruvakula has raised alarms about certain caregivers committing serious crimes against children, emphasizing that the traditional apology protocol, known as Veisorosorovi, is being misapplied.
Ratu Viliame expressed his concerns, stating, “It is something we sympathize with. We read in the media that the same people responsible for children’s welfare are committing these degrading acts. The traditional protocol of seeking apology is taken out of context.” He clarified that Veisorosorovi was intended for resolving minor disputes, not for excusing grave crimes such as sexual assault. He asserted that offenders should be held accountable within the legal system, facing meaningful penalties before any consideration of reintegration into the community.
The need for strong family leadership is crucial, according to Ratu Viliame, who urged parents to take active roles in safeguarding their children and promptly reporting any misconduct to the authorities. He believes that active parental involvement can help reduce drug-related offences, thereby alleviating some of the pressure on the Fiji Police Force.
The GCC remains committed to collaborating with law enforcement, religious organizations, and counterparts in New Zealand to confront youth and social challenges throughout the nation.
