Ro Naulu Mataitini, the chief of Rewa, has called upon national leaders to prioritize the urgent need to address Fiji’s growing drug epidemic instead of focusing on international concerns like the ongoing conflict in Gaza. He pointed out that local communities are grappling with severe challenges due to narcotics, and simply depending on village bylaws will not address the issue effectively. Mataitini proposed the formation of a national body that would enhance coordination between government efforts and grassroots initiatives.
“We need action, not just meetings,” he emphasized, underscoring the necessity of tackling the drug crisis domestically before turning attention to foreign issues. He conveyed a strong message that Fiji’s future is at risk, urging leaders to implement decisive measures.
In response to the escalating drug-related issues, the Vanua o Rewa has taken proactive measures, particularly by establishing crime prevention teams (CPT) across all 52 villages in the province, including Beqa Island. Since late 2023, these community teams have acted as the first line of defense against drug abuse, operating under a ‘See Something, Say Something’ mantra. The local villagers are especially vigilant at peak traffic periods, such as Thursdays and weekends, to thwart illegal activities, particularly in key areas like Nasali Landing, where around 13,000 commuters pass through daily.
Additionally, Mataitini highlighted that the Great Council of Chiefs has acknowledged the lack of cohesive coordination on a national level, calling for the establishment of a central body to facilitate collaboration between governmental authorities and village initiatives. “The GCC wants to see actions and not just meetings,” he asserted.
By rallying national leaders to unite and take decisive actions, Mataitini envisions a safer and more secure environment for future generations in Fiji. This call to action reflects a hopeful movement towards enhancing community involvement and fostering proactive governance to effectively tackle pressing social challenges.
