The United Nations Office in Suva celebrated its 80th anniversary on August 26, marking its ongoing mission to foster peace, human rights, and sustainable development across the globe. The anniversary event not only celebrated the UN’s history, which has grown from 51 founding members to 193 today, but also emphasized Fiji’s dedication to regional collaboration and multilateralism. Participants highlighted the critical need for a robust UN presence in the Pacific region to tackle its unique developmental challenges.
Fiji’s esteemed legacy in UN peacekeeping was acknowledged, reflecting the nation’s commitment shaped by the vision of the late Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara. Rabuka reaffirmed Fiji’s steadfast commitment to the principles of the UN Charter, illustrating the country’s ongoing support for global cooperation and diplomacy as the organization undertakes significant reforms to enhance its operations.
