Fiji Champions Ocean of Peace at UNGA80

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is currently attending the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA80) in New York. His participation is focused on reaffirming Fiji’s commitment to global advocacy across several key areas, including peace, climate action, and multilateral cooperation. This year’s assembly holds special significance for Fiji and its Pacific neighbors as Rabuka aims to further the “Ocean of Peace” vision—a concept that promotes the Pacific as a region free from geopolitical conflicts, emphasizing unity and responsible management of ocean resources.

In the statement released by the Fijian Government, Rabuka highlighted the importance of this assembly in providing a platform to share the Pacific’s collective voice. “Our vision of the Pacific as an ‘Ocean of Peace’ is more relevant now than ever, as we face increasing geopolitical pressures and worsening climate impacts,” he noted. This initiative was initially introduced by Rabuka during UNGA78 in 2023 and has gained support from Pacific leaders.

Accompanying Rabuka to UNGA80 are key figures such as the Minister for Environment and Climate Change, Mosese Bulitavu, and other high-ranking officials. The general debate of the assembly, taking place from September 23 to 29, serves as a critical forum for the 193 member states to address pressing international challenges collaboratively.

Rabuka’s leadership in promoting the “Ocean of Peace” aligns with the ongoing cooperation between the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat and the Fijian Government. Their collective efforts aim to establish a unified strategy focused on peace, security, and sustainable development for the Pacific region. The Prime Minister’s advocacy accentuates Fiji’s role in leading initiatives that stress the importance of protecting the ocean and fostering a peaceful environment.

Through these diplomatic engagements, Fiji not only bolsters its role within the international community but also reinforces its position as a staunch advocate for peaceful coexistence and environmental stewardship in the Pacific and beyond.
