The Raiwaqa Navua Crematorium Committee is raising serious concerns about ongoing vandalism and misconduct at the Raiwaqa Cemetery, a shared resting place for Christians, Muslims, and Hindus. During a public submission to the Standing Committee on Justice, Law and Human Rights, committee member Chaitanya Lakshman expressed frustration over the cemetery transforming into a late-night gathering place where individuals engage in alcohol consumption, creating an environment reminiscent of a nightclub.
Lakshman described the situation as increasingly problematic, stating, “There is a huge problem we are facing at Raiwaqa Cemetery. Every weekend, or during any free time, our crematorium and cemetery turn into a nightclub.” He emphasized that such behavior is disrespectful to the sanctity of the site and the memory of those laid to rest.
In response to these challenges, Lakshman is advocating for revisions to the Burial and Cremation (Amendment) Bill 2025, which would introduce stricter legal measures aimed at preventing trespassing, vandalism, and desecration of burial sites. He proposed that individuals found violating these regulations should face specific legal penalties, urging that those without lawful excuse be held accountable.
Furthermore, Lakshman stressed the potential for rehabilitation-focused penalties rather than traditional prison sentences for offenders, a perspective that aligns with ongoing discussions in Fiji about enhancing legislative measures related to burial practices and cemetery sanctity.
These calls for legislative change come as part of a broader national initiative aimed at improving end-of-life services throughout Fiji.
