Fiji Celebrates World Maritime Day, Emphasizing Ocean Duty and Opportunity

World Maritime Day was recently celebrated with the theme “Our Ocean, Our Obligation and Our Opportunity,” marking an important occasion to highlight the crucial role oceans play in sustaining life on Earth. The event was held at the Pacific Centre for Maritime Studies in Laucala Bay, Suva, emphasizing the need to protect and preserve the oceans amidst rising threats such as plastic pollution, rising temperatures, acidification, and overfishing.

International Maritime Organization (IMO) Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez pointed out that the decline in ocean health is driven by human activities, but it’s within our power to reverse it. He called for collaborative efforts to reduce pollution, protect marine life, and adopt sustainable practices, highlighting the dual responsibility and opportunity represented by the ocean. Protecting the oceans not only involves safeguarding marine ecosystems but also presents a chance to foster stronger economies and ensure a safer future.

The event saw prominent participation, with Assistant Minister for Public Works and Meteorological Services, Naisa Tuinaceva, as the chief guest. Tuinaceva emphasized Fiji’s heavy reliance on the ocean, noting that 98% of the country is ocean and 75% of its population depends on it for livelihood. He reiterated Fiji’s commitment to marine protection, driven by past incidents such as domestic oil spills, by engaging in international treaties and regional cooperation.

Various presentations took place during the celebration, including contributions by the Blue Prosperity Fiji team and initiatives like the Adopt a Ship Program and Trashboom. It provided a platform for students and stakeholders to engage with different maritime organizations and learn more about the sector.

This event complements the ongoing global efforts to prioritize maritime safety and environmental protection, as also expressed in related World Maritime Day celebrations with themes centering around safety and innovation in the shipping industry. These celebrations continue to underscore the essential role shipping and maritime activities play in global trade, economic stability, and environmental conservation.

With collective efforts and responsible practices, the maritime community aims to ensure the oceans remain a vital part of our existence, supporting a healthier planet and sustainable future.
