The Western branch of the Hindi Parishad in Fiji, in partnership with the High Commission of India and the Girmit Multicultural Centre, commemorated World Hindi Day at the Girmit Multicultural Centre in Lautoka. The event highlighted the significance of promoting the Hindi language and its cultural relevance in Fiji’s multicultural landscape.
Dr. Subashni Kumar, an associate professor at Fiji National University, emphasized the celebration’s goal of preserving and promoting the Hindi language. She encouraged the community and the Indian diaspora both in Fiji and worldwide to participate. “We come together as one to promote our mother tongue and its cultural importance,” Dr. Kumar remarked, underlining the unified effort to celebrate Hindi and strengthen community ties.
Participants from various regions, including Sigatoka, Ba, Nadi, and Lautoka, attended the program. Students showcased their talents through poetry, dance, oratory, and storytelling, with certificates awarded to those who presented outstanding performances.
Dr. Kumar expressed her appreciation to the Indian High Commission in Fiji for their financial backing, which is essential for stimulating youth engagement in Hindi language and culture through awards and prizes. She also announced plans for five more celebrations throughout the year, which will include events for Holi and Girmit, as well as honors for students achieving top marks in Hindi across different grade levels.
The dedication to celebrating the Hindi language and its cultural heritage reflects Fiji’s vibrant diversity and enhances both community pride and cohesion. With future events planned, the Hindi Parishad continues to play a pivotal role in promoting cultural awareness in Fiji.
