Fiji Celebrates Inaugural National Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care as MLTC Marks 50th Anniversary

The Ministry of Education has expressed its congratulations to the inaugural class of students graduating with a National Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care (Level 5) from the Methodist Lay Training College in Davuilevu, located just outside Nausori. Minister Aseri Radrodro praised the 13 graduates for their commitment to a profession that fundamentally shapes lifelong learning.

This occasion is particularly special, as it coincides with the 50th Anniversary of the Methodist Lay Training College, a pivotal institution that has historically been involved in training teachers, church leaders, and community workers imbued with skill, compassion, and faith. Minister Radrodro commended the graduates, stating, “Your hard work, dedication, and faith have brought you to this proud moment. You are the pioneers of this program, the first to complete the National Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care at MLTC. This achievement is not only a personal success for you, but also a proud milestone for the College, the Methodist Church, and the Ministry of Education.”

In his remarks, the Minister acknowledged the vital role played by parents, guardians, and educators in supporting these graduates. Their guidance has cultivated dedicated individuals prepared to make meaningful contributions to Fiji’s education sector.

The two-year National Diploma program encompasses a diverse selection of modules, including Development and Attachment Theory, Planning and Evaluation in Early Childhood Education (ECE), Personal Development, Community Interaction, and Operating and Establishing ECE Services in Fiji. The curriculum also includes an 11-week practical teaching placement in kindergartens, providing graduates with essential hands-on experience.

This graduation not only represents a significant step for the individuals involved but also denotes an encouraging trend in educational offerings within Fiji, evident in other recent graduations. For instance, students from Nasinu Muslim College and Namosi Secondary School received recognition for their achievements in vocational training, underscoring government initiatives to bolster technical and vocational education in the region. Such initiatives reflect a broader commitment to fostering skills and opportunities that empower Fijian youth.

Overall, these milestones serve as a beacon of hope, demonstrating that with dedication and supportive educational pathways, students can unlock their potential and contribute positively to their communities in Fiji.
