The recent spike in arson incidents against sugar cane farms in Fiji has created significant challenges for the Lautoka sugar mill, as noted by Charan Jeath Singh, the Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry. During a Parliamentary session on Monday, Singh assured that despite these difficulties, all sugarcane will still be processed at the Lautoka mill.
The Minister reiterated the government’s dedication to prioritizing the cane from affected farmers in districts ranging from Rakiraki to Tavua and Ba. To address the concerns of farmers, a two-quota processing system per farm is being implemented each day. Additionally, Singh indicated that all transportation costs for lorry drivers would be covered to alleviate any financial pressures stemming from these disruptions.
In response to the recent arson threats, the Fiji Sugar Corporation is actively providing support to farmers who have experienced crop losses. Singh expressed the operational challenges associated with depending on a single mill for processing cane, emphasizing that the factory’s capacity is crucial for determining increased quotas. The Fiji Sugar Corporation is committed to assisting farmers and managing the logistics of processed cane effectively.
Singh also highlighted a positive development surrounding the Ba sugar mill, which is currently undergoing maintenance. He mentioned that if the required parts arrive on time, the mill could resume operations in approximately two months. The government has started discussions with insurance companies concerning coverage for the damages, acknowledging that the situation at the Lautoka mill is worsened by the ongoing inactivity of the Rakiraki mill.
This situation points to an urgent need for enhanced safety and operational protocols in the industry, especially as stakeholders voice concerns around recurring mechanical failures at the mills. There is a shared commitment among various stakeholders to strengthen the sector’s resilience. Initiatives are in progress to improve infrastructure to ensure continuous support for livelihoods dependent on the sugar industry.
As the Fiji Sugar Corporation seeks to manage these challenges, the proactive approaches being taken reflect a broader intention to secure stability within the industry. This collaboration among stakeholders fosters a sense of hope for a sustainable future, which is essential for both the economy and the communities that heavily rely on the success of the sugar sector.
