During a recent assembly in Bua, Acting Prime Minister Professor Biman Prasad underscored the necessity for civil servants to be particularly attentive to the needs of those in rural areas. His commentary came in response to grievances from local landowners about the service provided by Ministry of Forestry officials in Labasa. Professor Prasad conveyed that both Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and cabinet ministers hold high expectations for civil servants, encouraging them to diligently serve the community.
Despite noting that certain governmental departments have encountered service delivery issues, Professor Prasad affirmed the unwavering dedication of ministers and civil servants to address the public’s needs. “We support the landowners’ view that we need to be very responsive, agile, and receptive to complaints and requests from our communities. It is the job of civil servants to do that,” he stated.
While acknowledging occasional service shortcomings, Professor Prasad expressed confidence that government officials generally act promptly to address public concerns, showcasing a continuous effort to improve public service delivery. His emphasis on civil servants’ responsiveness aligns with Prime Minister Rabuka’s overarching goal to enhance public services throughout Fiji. This vision promotes an environment where civil servants actively identify and improve upon areas of need, especially in critical sectors such as education, public works, and healthcare.
This initiative highlights the government’s dedication to fostering a culture of open communication and accountability within public service. By continually pursuing feedback and resolving issues, both the government and its civil servants aspire to elevate service standards, ultimately benefiting all citizens. Such collaborative efforts and proactive strategies can lead to significant improvements, paving the way for a more equitable and inclusive society. Professor Prasad’s statements reflect the commitment of government leaders to establish a responsive and efficient public service sector that caters to the varied needs of its citizens.
