Fiji Calls for Women Leaders in STEM to Shape a Sustainable Pacific

Fiji’s Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, recently emphasized the importance of empowering women in leadership, particularly in the fields of education and science, as a foundational aspect of national development. Speaking as the Chief Guest at a panel discussion organized by the Fiji National University and the University of the South Pacific, Kiran articulated that inclusive leadership is vital for sustainable futures across the Pacific region.

The event, themed “Leadership and Gender Equity for Sustainable Futures,” gathered academics and advocates to discuss strategies for increasing the presence of women in leadership roles, especially in the historically male-dominated fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Kiran highlighted the Ministry’s commitment to the initiative from its inception, stating that fostering women’s leadership can lead to stronger and more resilient communities.

She remarked, “Enhancing women’s leadership is not just about equality — it’s about effectiveness. Sustainable development in Fiji and the Pacific relies on inclusive decision-making that leverages everyone’s talents and experiences.” Kiran also pointed out that the Fiji Women’s Economic Empowerment National Action Plan (2025–2030) and Gender-Responsive Planning and Budgeting are integral to the government’s long-term vision for embedding women’s leadership within national frameworks.

Kiran commended both the Fiji National University and the University of the South Pacific for their roles in advancing discussions surrounding gender and leadership. She affirmed the government’s commitment to creating supportive environments that allow women in educational institutions, workplaces, and communities to lead with confidence and make significant impacts.

This call for increased representation among women in leadership aligns with ongoing national initiatives advocating for gender-responsive policies and the essential contributions of women across various sectors. By fostering an environment conducive to women’s empowerment, Fiji stands poised for considerable social and economic advancements toward an inclusive and equitable future. The momentum built through these discussions offers hope for enduring change and increased recognition of the vital role women play in shaping Fiji’s development.
