Fiji Calls for Unity in Diversity Amid Interfaith Tensions

The Then India Sanmarga Ikya Sangam (TISI Sangam) has strongly rebuked the recent offensive remarks made by a pastor that targeted both the Hindu and Muslim communities in Fiji. TISI Sangam expressed substantial disappointment at the dissemination of a video that showcases inflammatory comments undermining the essence of Fiji’s celebrated multicultural and multi-religious identity.

In a statement released by TISI Sangam, President Parveen Bala articulated that such rhetoric not only offends devotees but forms a blatant attack against the values of respect and unity foundational to Fijian society. Bala emphasized the principles of harmony, understanding, and humanitarian service, which are central to the teachings of the organization’s founder, Sadhu Kuppuswamy.

TISI Sangam has called upon the people of Fiji to reject any urges for retaliation and instead choose forgiveness, supporting the ongoing investigation by the Fiji Police Force into this matter. Bala articulated a clear message of solidarity, asserting that Fiji’s strength derives from its diversity. He urged citizens to respond not with anger but with a commitment to peaceful dialogue and love.

This incident aligns with significant concerns regarding rising religious intolerance in Fiji, as echoed by other organizations, including the Fiji Muslim League and the Shree Sanatan Dharm Pratinidhi Sabha. Both entities have condemned derogatory remarks directed towards their faiths, highlighting the need for compassion and mutual respect among all communities.

In response to ongoing tensions, community leaders are hopeful that such challenges may ignite deeper discussions on understanding and respect across different religions, reinforcing a collective aspiration for a cohesive and harmonious future. This collective response showcases a desire among various groups to come together and address the divisions that threaten Fiji’s long-standing tradition of tolerance and coexistence. By fostering interfaith dialogue and understanding, there lies an opportunity for the nation to refresh its commitment to unity in diversity amidst the challenges it currently faces.
