Fiji Calls for Online Kindness and Safer Christmas Celebrations

Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection Sashi Kiran has urged Fijians to combat the escalating trend of judgment and harassment on social media. She highlighted the damaging effects of online negativity on communities, suggesting it stems from a “deep personal insecurity” among the perpetrators.

During the Christmas Lighting Ceremony at Shangri-La Yanuca Island Fiji, Ms Kiran emphasized that the festive season is an ideal time to cultivate compassion, both in the digital space and in real life. She called upon the public not to “give oxygen” to abusive behaviors and encouraged families to proactively address harmful actions.

“Spread kindness and compassion online,” she stated, also advising individuals to speak to those who exhibit abusive tendencies and encourage them to seek help. Ms Kiran noted a troubling trend in rising cases of child neglect and pointed out that the Christmas period often sees spikes in violence and alcohol-related incidents.

To promote safer celebrations, she urged families and communities to establish “clear ground rules.” “Your celebration should not inflict harm on another human being—whether it is punching a man or punching a woman. It is simply not acceptable,” she asserted.

Additionally, she encouraged parents to prioritize quality time with children and focus on nutritious meals during this festive time, as well as to revive storytelling traditions to instill values and resilience in the younger generation. “Ask children not only what career they want, but what act of kindness they practiced today,” she advised. “Our investment should be in raising good human beings.”

In her remarks, Ms Kiran also recognized the role of organizations and communities in supporting initiatives like those at Shangri-La’s Treasure House Children’s Home, stressing how resorts contribute to social upliftment through their community engagement efforts. “It is amazing to see resorts giving back through environmental protection, schoolwork, and community support,” she said, acknowledging that their corporate social responsibility initiatives truly strengthen local communities.

Through these combined efforts, there is hope for fostering a more positive and compassionate society, especially during a time that should celebrate goodwill and harmony.
