Ro Naulu Mataitini, the chief of Rewa, has voiced a critical call to action regarding Fiji’s intensifying drug crisis. He expressed concern that while attention is being directed towards international issues, such as the conflict in Gaza, national leaders must prioritize pressing local challenges. According to Mataitini, Fiji’s communities are grappling with a significant narcotics problem, exacerbated by ineffective village regulations that fall short of addressing the issue.
Mataitini emphasized the immediate necessity for establishing a national body dedicated to coordinating government efforts alongside local community actions. He firmly believes that discussions should pave the way for tangible actions. “We need action, not just meetings,” he asserted, highlighting that the future of Fiji hinges on resolving domestic issues before looking outward.
In a proactive response to this crisis, the Vanua o Rewa has initiated measures to combat drug abuse. All 52 villages, including those on Beqa Island, have banded together to form crime prevention teams (CPT) since late 2023. These grassroots units are composed of local residents who serve as the first line of defense against drug-related activities. With a strong emphasis on a “See Something, Say Something” policy, these teams conduct vigilant surveillance, particularly at Nasali Landing, where approximately 13,000 residents commute daily. The CPT members focus their monitoring efforts on key transit points and peak traffic times, such as Thursdays and weekends, to deter narcotics trafficking.
Mataitini also highlighted an advocacy effort by the Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) for improved national coordination, suggesting that such collaboration is currently lacking. He called for a central organization that could effectively unify governmental strategies with community initiatives. “The GCC wants to see actions and not just meetings,” he noted, urging national leaders to foster collaboration to protect future generations from the ramifications of drug abuse.
Mataitini’s passionate appeal serves as a reminder of the critical need for coordinated action in addressing the drug crisis, showcasing the importance of grassroots efforts and community involvement in safeguarding the nation’s future.
