Fiji Cabinet debates electricity tariffs amid transparency questions

Fiji Cabinet Deliberates on Electricity Tariffs Amid Rumors

Minister for Public Works Ro Filipe Tuisawau has confirmed that electricity tariffs were a topic of discussion in today’s Cabinet meeting. When approached by FBC News regarding the rumors of a potential 22 percent increase in tariffs, Ro Filipe chose to withhold specific details, stating that the matter is part of ongoing Cabinet discussions. He assured that the Cabinet Office would soon release an official statement to clarify the situation.

FBC News previously reported a press briefing that was scheduled for last Friday in Lautoka, which was expected to announce the tariff increase, was unexpectedly canceled. Reporters had arrived on-site, raising concerns about the transparency surrounding the decision-making process regarding electricity pricing.

Earlier this year, Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) proposed a 32 percent increase in tariffs; however, this was rejected by the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC). The FCCC determined that the proposal did not present sufficient justification and voiced apprehensions about the financial impact on households and businesses.

Former EFL Chief Executive Hasmukh Patel indicated that the company intends to submit a revised proposal aimed at enabling necessary infrastructure upgrades and fostering a shift towards cleaner energy sources.

As the Cabinet Office is expected to provide updates following today’s discussions, the public awaits further information regarding the future of electricity tariffs. This situation is crucial for both consumers and businesses, and there is hope that the decisions made will prioritize their long-term welfare.
