Fiji Budget 2025-26 Bets on iTaukei Landowners’ Economic Rise

The Coalition Government has committed $3 million to the iTaukei Resource Owners Support and Development Fund in the 2025–2026 national budget. This fund is strategically designed to empower iTaukei resource owners, enabling them to create and expand sustainable businesses that utilize land and resources effectively.

For the next financial year, the fund will support 60 projects through Merchant Finance Limited, with 20 as ongoing initiatives and 40 as new propositions, along with five projects funded via the Fiji Development Bank (FDB). Current participant provinces include Tailevu, Macuata, Ba, and Nadi, with potential for more provinces to join soon.

Eligibility criteria for the fund stipulate the requirement for proper registration and legal recognition of the landowning group, a viable business plan featuring realistic cash flows, strong governance, and comprehensive landowner support. Additionally, applicants must commit to utilizing their land and resources sustainably.

Reflecting on past achievements, in 2024–2025, 11 projects totaling $291,000 were approved via Merchant Finance Limited, while $331,000 worth of projects were reviewed by the Ministry of Finance. Notable accomplishments include Tailevu Provincial Company securing a $3 million facility through FDB with subsidized interest rates, and successful subdivision projects in Nadi and Lautoka.

The initiative intends not only to engage iTaukei landowners actively in Fiji’s economic development but also to position them as leaders rather than just participants. It aligns with broader governmental efforts aimed at empowering the iTaukei community, as previously highlighted with the establishment of the iTaukei Trust Fund Investment, offering low-interest loans to foster economic growth and entrepreneurship within the community.

By providing necessary financial support and encouraging active participation in commercial ventures, these collective efforts promise a hopeful future for the iTaukei community, aiming to reduce poverty, build economic resilience, and support sustainable development. The overarching goal remains to embed the iTaukei community more deeply and effectively into Fiji’s growing economy while respecting and preserving their rich cultural heritage.
