Fiji is preparing for more intense rainfall and higher temperatures as a weak La Niña phenomenon affects weather patterns across the Pacific region. The Fiji Meteorological Service has released forecasts suggesting that this month will experience above-normal rainfall, particularly in the Western and Central Divisions. Additionally, the Northern and Eastern Divisions, as well as Rotuma, are expected to see normal to above-normal precipitation.

These wet conditions are projected to continue until March, prompting concerns over the risk of flooding, especially in low-lying areas that are particularly vulnerable. Historically, La Niña has been associated with increased rainfall during Fiji’s wet season, and this year aligns with that trend, with average temperatures anticipated to remain elevated.

With daytime and nighttime temperatures expected to be higher than usual, residents are urged to stay alert. Currently, the cyclone season is underway, and experts warn that Fiji might experience one to two cyclones, with indications that even less intense weather systems could bring substantial rainfall.

Public authorities are encouraging individuals to take preventive measures, such as clearing drainage systems and securing their homes, to lessen the potential impact of the anticipated weather changes. As Fiji prepares to face these challenges, community preparedness will be essential in minimizing disruption and ensuring the safety of its residents during the wet season.
