A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for various regions in Fiji, prompting local authorities to urge residents to take immediate precautions for their safety. The National Weather Forecasting Centre in Nadi released the alert at 2 PM, targeting the interior and southern areas of Viti Levu, which includes locations from Sigatoka along the Coral Coast to Navua, as well as southern parts of Vanua Levu, particularly Bua and Cakaudrove.
Forecasters have noted that daytime heating is contributing to an uptick in thunderstorm activity across these inland regions of Fiji’s two primary islands. These thunderstorms are expected to intensify and shift southward, impacting southern districts in the coming hours.
The severe thunderstorms are forecasted to bring heavy rainfall, increasing the risk of flash flooding in low-lying and prone areas. Moreover, residents can anticipate frequent and dangerous lightning strikes accompanying these storms.
Officials are advising the public to stay away from flooded creeks and drains and to avoid walking, cycling, or driving through floodwaters. It is also recommended that individuals unplug electrical appliances and computers if they hear thunder or see lightning. Those outdoors during lightning activity should minimize their height and seek shelter indoors as soon as possible.
Moreover, individuals are cautioned against seeking refuge under trees and are encouraged to remain indoors, keeping away from windows, with particular attention to ensuring that children are kept safe inside. Thunderstorm activity along with heavy rainfall and lightning is expected to continue into the late afternoon and evening. However, the unpredictable nature of storms means that not all areas may face the same level of threat.
By staying vigilant and following safety guidelines, the community can effectively navigate this weather challenge, fostering a sense of mutual care and preparedness among residents.
