The Fiji Meteorological Service has issued a warning regarding severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall affecting various regions of the country. This warning specifically targets the interior and southern parts of Viti Levu, extending from Sigatoka along the Coral Coast to Navua. Additionally, southeastern areas of Vanua Levu, including southern Bua and Cakaudrove, are also under alert.
The current unstable weather conditions are attributed to a northerly wind flow, which is expected to lead to thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening. These intense storms pose a significant risk of heavy rainfall, which could result in flash flooding, particularly in low-lying areas, within the next few hours.
Authorities are urging the public to take precautions by steering clear of flooded creeks and drains. Individuals are advised against walking, cycling, or driving through floodwaters. It is recommended that electrical appliances be unplugged and that residents remain indoors, especially away from windows. Parents are encouraged to keep children inside during this period of inclement weather.
The thunderstorm activity is anticipated to persist until late afternoon or evening. A Tropical Disturbance identified as TD05F entered Fiji’s Area of Responsibility at 6 a.m. and is currently situated northwest of New Caledonia. Although the system will move southeast and exit Fiji’s area by tomorrow, it poses no direct threat to the islands at this time.
The Nadi Weather Office remains vigilant and will continue to monitor the situation, issuing updates as necessary. They emphasize the importance of following official Fiji Meteorological channels for reliable information, discouraging reliance on unverified sources. Preparedness and awareness are essential, as severe weather phenomena continue to impact various parts of the nation.
