A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for parts of Viti Levu and the eastern half of Vanua Levu, prompting authorities to alert residents of potential flash flooding in the coming hours.

The warning encompasses the northeastern regions of Viti Levu, stretching from Ra-Rakiraki, through Tailevu North, to Nasinu, Nausori, and Naitasiri. Similarly affected areas in Vanua Levu include Labasa, Udu Point, Wailevu, and Savusavu, extending to Saqani and Natewa.

The Fiji Meteorological Service has attributed these unstable weather conditions to a trough situated near the Fiji group. As a result, residents can expect afternoon and evening thunderstorms characterized by heavy rainfall throughout the warned regions.

Meteorologists caution that these severe thunderstorms may produce intense rainfall, posing a significant risk of flash flooding, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas during this critical period.

Authorities are advising the public to take necessary precautions, which include steering clear of flooded creeks and drains, refraining from walking, cycling, or driving through floodwaters, and unplugging electrical appliances. Residents are also encouraged to stay indoors, particularly away from windows, while parents are urged to keep children inside and to remain vigilant by monitoring weather updates closely.

Thunderstorm activity, featuring heavy rain and intense lightning, is expected to continue into the late afternoon or evening. However, officials remind the public that the unpredictable nature of thunderstorms means not all areas may experience the same level of impact, as conditions can vary significantly across different locations.

As the community prepares for potential severe weather, staying informed and taking safety measures could help mitigate risks and ensure everyone’s well-being.
