Fiji Braces for Possible Cyclone as TD03F Disturbance Grows Near Solomon Islands

The Fiji Meteorological Service has announced that a low-pressure system near the Solomon Islands has strengthened into Tropical Disturbance TD03F, with conditions becoming more favorable for its development. Forecasters indicate that TD03F is expected to move southeastward between Vanuatu and Fiji in the coming days. They warn that there is a moderate to high chance it could evolve into a tropical cyclone within 48 hours, with the center likely to intensify near Vanuatu.

For Fiji, expected impacts include fresh to strong northerly winds beginning late Sunday or early Monday, with sustained speeds reaching up to 55 km/h and gusts possibly hitting 80 km/h. Depending on the eventual strength and trajectory of the system, near-gale or even gale-force winds may also occur.

Additionally, persistent rain is anticipated throughout the country next week due to an active trough of low pressure, heightening the risk of flash flooding, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas. The Fiji Meteorological Service has emphasized the need for the public to stay informed and prepared while advising against unnecessary travel during adverse weather conditions. They are committed to closely monitoring the situation and will provide timely updates as more information becomes available.

As Fiji faces these potentially impactful weather events, communities are encouraged to take appropriate precautions and stay vigilant in the days ahead.
