The Fiji Meteorological Service has issued several severe weather alerts as a trough of low pressure continues to affect the nation, bringing heavy rainfall, flash flooding, and strong winds to many regions of the Fiji Group.
In a recent bulletin, meteorologists confirmed that warnings for heavy rain and flash floods are in effect throughout the Fiji Group. A strong wind advisory has also been declared for the coastal areas of the Yasawa and Mamanuca Groups, including regions such as Nadi, Lautoka, Ba, Tavua, Rakiraki, Bua, Macuata, Labasa, Seaqaqa, Udu Point, Rabi, Taveuni, Lau, and Lomaiviti.
The ongoing unsettled weather is attributed to a slow-moving trough of low pressure, with a shallow system situated along the trough west of Viti Levu. This inclement weather is predicted to continue through the weekend, resulting in heavy rains, squally thunderstorms, and sustained strong winds.
Areas particularly affected can expect intermittent showers, some of which may be heavy, especially in the western and northern parts of Viti Levu, as well as in Ba, Ra, Naitasiri, Tailevu North, Vanua Levu, Taveuni, and nearby islands, including Yasawa, Lau, and Lomaiviti. Winds are anticipated to remain fresh to strong from the northwest at speeds of 35 to 45 kilometers per hour, with gusts reaching up to 60 kilometers per hour, contributing to rough sea conditions.
Authorities have warned of the hazards associated with prolonged localized heavy rainfall, which could lead to flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone regions, including rivers and streams. The public is encouraged to stay alert, avoid flooded areas, and heed official weather advisories to ensure their safety.
This situation underscores the necessity for community preparedness and resilience against natural weather phenomena. It serves as a reminder of the importance of remaining informed and taking preventative measures during severe weather events, fostering a community spirit that prioritizes safety and well-being amidst challenges posed by nature.
