The National Weather Forecasting Centre in Nadi has issued a heavy rain alert for multiple regions across Fiji, as an active trough of low pressure continues to impact the area. The alert was announced at 5:30 am today, January 1, 2026, and encompasses the Northern Division, the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, as well as the eastern and interior sections of Viti Levu. This includes areas from Momi through Navua, Suva, and Nausori up to Rakiraki, extending into the interior regions of Ba, Ra, Nadroga-Navosa, Serua, Namosi, Naitasiri, and Tailevu North.

Forecasters predict that the cloud cover and rainfall will shift eastwards, impacting much of the country throughout the day. The Centre has noted that occasional rain and thunderstorms are expected, particularly in the areas under alert, with persistent heavy rainfall potentially leading to flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone neighborhoods.

Although the rain is anticipated to taper off into lighter showers later today, authorities have advised residents to remain vigilant. The public is encouraged to keep abreast of official updates, exercise caution by avoiding flooded areas, and reconsider any unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall.

Fishermen and individuals residing near rivers and streams are particularly urged to be on alert and exercise extreme caution due to the heightened risk of flooding. The situation serves as a reminder for everyone to stay prepared and prioritize safety during severe weather events.
