The Fiji Meteorological Service has issued multiple severe weather warnings as an active trough of low pressure continues to impact the nation. This weather system is resulting in heavy rainfall, flash flooding, and strong winds across many regions of the Fiji Group.

In an early morning bulletin, the meteorological office confirmed that heavy rain and flash flood warnings are in effect for the entire Fiji Group. Furthermore, a strong wind warning has been declared for the coastal areas of the Yasawa and Mamanuca Groups, as well as parts of Nadi, Lautoka, Ba, Tavua, Rakiraki, Bua, Macuata, Labasa, Seaqaqa, Udu Point, Rabi, Taveuni, Lau, and Lomaiviti.

Meteorologists attribute the ongoing unsettled weather to the slow-moving trough of low pressure, with a shallow low-pressure system situated along the trough west of Viti Levu. This inclement weather is expected to last through the weekend, leading to heavy rains, squally thunderstorms, and strong winds.

Affected areas can anticipate occasional rain, heavy at times, particularly in western and northern parts of Viti Levu, Ba, Ra, Naitasiri, Tailevu North, Vanua Levu, Taveuni, and surrounding islands, as well as Yasawa, Lau, and Lomaiviti. Winds are expected to be fresh to strong from the northwest, blowing at 35 to 45 kilometers per hour, with gusts potentially reaching 60 kilometers per hour, accompanied by rough seas.

Authorities have issued a warning regarding the dangers posed by persistent localized heavy rainfall, which could result in flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas, including rivers and streams. The public is strongly advised to remain vigilant, avoid flooded crossings, and closely follow official weather advisories to ensure their safety.

This situation highlights the need for community preparedness and resilience in the face of natural weather events, emphasizing the importance of staying informed and taking precautions during severe weather circumstances.
