A flash flood alert has been issued for multiple areas in the Western Division of Fiji, including Sigatoka, Nadi, Lautoka, Ba, Tavua, and Rakiraki, as heavy rainfall persists in the region. The Fiji Meteorological Service indicates that a slow-moving trough of low pressure is responsible for the increased cloud cover and showers that have led to these adverse weather conditions.
Adding to the concern is Tropical Cyclone Urmil, currently at Category 2 intensity and located near Vanuatu. The cyclone is projected to move southeast, passing southwest of Fiji, which is likely to produce strong, moist northwesterly winds, resulting in additional rain bands affecting the Fiji group.
As these weather patterns evolve, the potential for flash flooding and riverine flooding is significantly heightened, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas. Authorities are closely monitoring tide levels in key locations. For example, Lautoka is expecting high tide at 3:41 PM, reaching 1.79 meters, with low tide later at 10:16 PM measuring 0.59 meters. In Suva, a high tide is forecasted at 4:02 PM at 1.65 meters, and low tide will occur at 10:36 PM at 0.18 meters.
Officials are warning that the combination of heavy rainfall and elevated tide levels may worsen flooding, especially in areas near river mouths and coastal communities. The public is urged to remain alert, avoid crossing flooded roads and waterways, and stay informed through official weather updates. The safety and well-being of the community are paramount as residents prepare for the potential impacts of these severe weather conditions. It is crucial for Fijians to take necessary precautions, demonstrating resilience in the face of challenging weather.
