The Fiji Meteorological Service has issued warnings following substantial rainfall across various regions of the country over the past 24 hours, which has increased the risk of flooding, particularly in vulnerable and downstream areas. Rainfall data from 3 AM yesterday to 3 AM today reveals that the heaviest rains were recorded in the interior and western parts of Viti Levu.

Notable rainfall totals include Nadarivatu with 248.5 mm, Navala at 223.5 mm, Nanoko at 179.5 mm, Waikubukubu at 163.0 mm, Monasavu with 134.0 mm, and Lautoka receiving 101.0 mm. Meteorologists attribute this intense rainfall to persistent rainbands linked to unsettled weather patterns impacting the Fiji Group.

As a result of the continuing rain, the Meteorological Service has cautioned that flash flooding and riverine flooding may occur, particularly in low-lying areas that are already susceptible to flooding and along river catchments that run downstream from the affected regions.

In response to the situation, authorities are urging the public to remain alert, avoid flooded roads and river crossings, and comply with all official weather advisories as conditions evolve. This alert underscores the critical need for preparedness during severe weather events, with the aim of ensuring community safety and reducing potential risks associated with flooding. The community’s proactive approach to heeding these warnings can help mitigate the impacts of such adverse weather conditions.
