Fiji’s amateur boxing team, led by head coach Cam Todd, showcased impressive skills at the New Zealand Invitational competition this past weekend. Comprising thirteen boxers, the team recorded a commendable tally of seven victories against six defeats, taking on a strong array of opponents from New Zealand.
Coach Todd expressed his satisfaction with the outcome, stating, “I was very happy with the competition. We had seven wins and six losses in total, facing a strong New Zealand lineup. My goal was to achieve at least a 50-50 record, and we have met that goal.” He commended the team’s collective effort, noting the standout performances of individual boxers.
Among them, young talent Steven Ledua made a significant impact, achieving victory over a seasoned rival, indicating his growth in the sport. Liu Lapolo also shone brightly, displaying maturity and dedication, which contributed to the team’s overall success. Despite her determined efforts, female boxer Jasmin Daunakamakama faced fierce competition from national champions and was unable to secure a win.
Looking back on the event, Todd acknowledged the encouraging results while emphasizing the need for further development. He pinpointed areas such as technical skills, ring intensity, and weight management as vital components for improvement as the boxers prepare for future challenges.
As the team looks forward to a busy November, they are set to participate in significant events like the Sukuna Bowl and the Golden Gloves, which are crucial for elite boxers aiming for a spot in the Commonwealth Games. Coach Todd also expressed gratitude to the Fijian community in New Zealand for their generous support, including food donations that contributed to the boxers’ well-being during the competition.
This event not only highlights the commitment to nurturing talent within Fiji’s boxing community but also illustrates the ongoing collaboration with international teams aimed at enhancing skills and performance. With a focus on youth engagement and continuous improvement in technical abilities, there is a promising outlook for the future of boxing in Fiji as the team strives to build upon their achievements and aspirations.
