Fiji boxing shows promise at NZ Invitational as rising stars prep for Commonwealth Games

Fiji’s amateur boxing team, under the leadership of head coach Cam Todd, demonstrated commendable performance at the New Zealand Invitational competition held over the weekend. The team, consisting of thirteen boxers, achieved a balanced record of seven wins and six losses, facing formidable opponents from New Zealand.

Coach Todd expressed his satisfaction with the results, stating, “I was very happy with the competition. We had seven wins and six losses in total, facing a strong New Zealand lineup. My goal was to achieve at least a 50-50 record, and we have met that goal.” He praised the collective effort of the team, highlighting the remarkable performances of several individual boxers.

Young boxer Steven Ledua particularly stood out, showcasing significant improvement by defeating a seasoned opponent, while Liu Lapolo demonstrated maturity and hard work, contributing to the team’s successes. Despite her valiant efforts, female boxer Jasmin Daunakamakama faced tough competition against national champions and was unable to secure a win.

Reflecting on the competition, Todd noted that while the results were encouraging, there is work to be done. He identified areas for improvement, including technical skills, ring intensity, and weight management, which are critical for the boxers’ development as they prepare for upcoming competitions.

Looking ahead, the team is gearing up for a busy November, including events such as the Sukuna Bowl and the Golden Gloves, which are particularly vital for elite boxers eyeing the Commonwealth Games. Todd expressed his gratitude to the Fijian community in New Zealand for their generous support and donations of food for the boxers.

This event not only underscores the commitment to fostering talent in Fiji’s boxing community but also reflects the ongoing collaboration with international teams to strengthen skills and performance. The focus on youth engagement and improving technical abilities signifies a hopeful future for Fiji’s boxing scene, as the team continues to build on its successes and aspirations.
