The Fiji Amateur Boxing Association (FABA) is grappling with considerable challenges as it prepares its athletes for the forthcoming 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, primarily due to a persistent lack of competitive opportunities. Head coach Cam Todd has emphasized that this issue is ongoing, largely attributed to Fiji’s geographical location and financial constraints within the region.
Todd pointed out that compared to northern hemisphere nations, Fiji faces significant obstacles related to limited resources and funding. These challenges hinder its ability to send boxers to international competitions or frequently host inviting teams, thereby compelling Fijian boxers to hone their skills predominantly through local competitions in preparation for major events.
Despite these hurdles, FABA is optimistic about its plans to host local competitions and is looking forward to several international events slated for April and June that are expected to enhance the development of the team. In a strategic move, FABA has also decided to base its squad in Sheffield, England, where they will train along with the Great Britain team for their final preparations ahead of the Games.
For the Commonwealth Games, FABA has received three allocated spots from the Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC), and is tirelessly working to secure two additional slots, which would enable a total of five boxers to compete in Scotland. Currently, the organization is assessing two weight divisions, aiming to finalize its team by the end of the month. Notably, boxers have already been identified for the 60kg and 80kg categories for men, as well as the 57kg category for women.
Once all selection processes are completed, the national Olympic committee is poised to confirm the final roster for the team. The 2026 Commonwealth Games are scheduled to take place from July 23 to August 2, representing a crucial platform for Fiji’s athletes to demonstrate their talent on an international stage, despite the numerous obstacles they encounter along the way. The spirit of determination and resilience among FABA and its boxers is a testament to their commitment to overcome these challenges and succeed in Glasgow.
