The Fiji Amateur Boxing Association (FABA) is excitedly preparing for a championship event slated for next year, with expectations of a robust turnout. National head coach Cam Todd has indicated that planning is already underway to secure a larger venue following some challenges encountered during the recent FABA Golden Gloves championships.
Todd is optimistic about partnering with the Fiji Sports Council to utilize the Vodafone Arena, anticipating it will better accommodate the expected influx of participants. A significant boost in representation is anticipated, with around 25 to 30 boxers expected from Australia and a substantial team from New Zealand. There is also a strong possibility that Samoa will confirm its participation, promising a thrilling two-day tournament.
The year 2026 is poised to be transformative for FABA, with major events like the Commonwealth Games and the Youth Olympics on the horizon. The upcoming competition will serve as vital preparation for local boxers. “The purpose of the tournament next year is a blend of developing my junior boxers while also preparing our elites for the Commonwealth Games,” Todd said. He highlighted the importance of providing competitive opportunities for boxers, especially those targeting participation in the Youth Olympics, which focuses on athletes aged 17.
Further emphasizing growth, Todd plans to organize coaching workshops and joint training sessions with international teams during the competition week, which will enhance the development of Fiji’s boxing talent. Although the exact date for the tournament is yet to be announced, the outlook for progress and development in Fijian boxing remains promising, fostering a vibrant and competitive environment for athletes.
