Dakua's Five-Year Comeback Sparks Return to Women's Boxing in Nadi

Fiji Boxer Anaseini Dakua Makes Courageous Comeback After Five-Year Break

Anaseini Dakua, after a five-year break from the boxing ring, is preparing for a highly anticipated return. She will face Unaisi Nata in the sole women’s match during the FMF Bluewater Boxing Promotion in Nadi. The last time Dakua fought was in 2019 when she was navigating her career as a single woman. Today, she returns not only as a seasoned boxer but also as a wife and a mother of three, facing the unique challenges of balancing family life with her professional ambitions.

Dakua reflected on the significant changes in her life, recalling her last bout from five years ago. “After five years, I’m fighting again. My last bout was in 2019 and I was single, but now I’m married with three children,” said Dakua. She acknowledged that while her training hasn’t been as regular due to family obligations, her past experience in the ring remains a valuable asset. The decision to return wasn’t without its hurdles, as she had to seek her husband’s consent to re-enter the sport. “Coming to fight in this bout, I really had to ask permission from my husband. I had to beg him to let me fight,” she shared candidly.

Despite these challenges, Dakua is enthusiastic about proving her resilience and is calling for fans to support female boxers by attending the event. She encouraged supporters by stating, “To all supporters, please come and support us.”

This match not only marks Dakua’s return but also evidences the increasing presence of women in boxing. Figures like Maureen Neumia have been pivotal in promoting female participation in the sport, advocating for women to embrace boxing’s opportunities. Both Dakua and Neumia emphasize the necessity of female representation, celebrating the strength and determination demonstrated by women in sports. As role models, they inspire a new generation of female boxers, championing the cause for women to follow their dreams in what is undoubtedly a demanding but gratifying discipline.

With this event, the spotlight is firmly on female boxing, highlighting its evolution and growing popularity. Through the determination and bravery of athletes like Dakua and Neumia, the sport continues to gain traction, encouraging more women to step into the ring.
